Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
CGST (Central GST): Collected by Central Government on intra-state transactions.
SGST (State GST): Collected by State Government on intra-state transactions.
IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by Central Government on inter-state transactions.
For intra-state: GST = CGST + SGST (equal halves). For inter-state: GST = IGST (single tax).
How do I calculate GST from a total amount?
Use our reverse GST calculation feature. Enter the total amount (including GST) and the GST rate. The calculator will extract the GST amount and show the net price. Formula: GST Amount = Total Amount × (GST Rate ÷ (100 + GST Rate)). Example: For ₹1180 total with 18% GST: GST = 1180 × (18 ÷ 118) = ₹180.
Are there different GST rates for services vs. goods?
Most services fall under the 18% GST slab, though some have special rates. Examples: Restaurant services (5%), Hotel accommodation (varies by tariff), Transportation services (5%, 12%, or 18% depending on type), Healthcare and educational services (exempt or 0%). Goods have more varied rates across all slabs from 0% to 28%.
What is the composition scheme in GST?
The composition scheme is for small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh for some states). They pay GST at fixed rates (1%, 5%, or 6% depending on business type) instead of regular GST slabs. They cannot claim input tax credit and cannot make inter-state supplies. Our calculator includes composition scheme rates for eligible businesses.
How does GST calculation work for mixed supplies?
For mixed supplies (bundled goods/services with different GST rates), the entire supply is taxed at the highest rate applicable to any item in the bundle. For composite supplies (natural bundled items), the principal supply's rate applies. Calculate each item separately if billed individually, or use the highest rate if bundled together.
